Internet prices in Africa. A comparative study.
The costs of using Internet in Africa varies a great deal between countries. This is well known to those
who travel in Africa, where a visit to an Internet café can cost anything from under one dollar to more
than three dollars per hour. The purchase value of one dollar varies a great deal between countries,
and the affordability of Internet services varies even more when one considers the income level in
different countries. The telecom regimes and the status of the telecom regulatory bodies is another
area with vast differences across the continent. Having observed these differences, I wanted to make
a systematic comparison across Africa, in order to show to customers, ISPs, regulators and the
telecom operators the actual situation, and how it is compared with other countries. I hope this simple
analysis will be an alarm clock in those countries where high costs of using the new information
technology is holding back its use – to the detriment of economic development.
